3 Reasons to Shop at Local Businesses

After five years of experience leading a TPA call center in North Carolina, Andrew decided to move west to explore parts unknown and follow his passion of helping others. Walking through the doors of Ubiquity Retirement + Savings, formerly The Online 401(k) for the first time, he knew he’d found something special. Continuing to delight clients and partners alike and 10 years later, Andrew has been able to develop new teams, co-found a non-profit of strategic alliances, co-produce a hard-hitting documentary about the looming retirement crisis, and still had time to spread the savings gospel far and wide. Using social media and actual media alike (Wall Street Journal, Fox Business, PlanSponsor, and more), you’ll find no one who likes talking retirement more than this guy!

The 2015 holiday season is almost upon us! No doubt you’ll start thinking about your holiday shopping to-do list very soon if you haven’t already.

However, before you hit the big box retailers and search the web for deals on Cyber Monday, I’d encourage you to think small…small business, that is.

This weekend, retailers and shoppers across the country will be celebrating and participating in the fifth-annual Small Business Saturday, designed to encourage people to frequent and buy from locally owned companies.

As a small business, this holiday gets my colleagues and I at Ubiquity Retirement + Savings really excited – we love to see this group celebrated and recognized!

Here are three reasons to purchase gifts for your loved ones from small local retailers.

1. When You Support Small Businesses, You Support Your Community

You’ve heard it “takes a village to raise a child,” but it also takes a village to support the village. Chances are, small business owners are stocking items that were supplied, produced or purchased by another business in your community.

When you shop local, not only are you supporting the business you made the purchase from, but the other local shops that the owners do business with!

2. Shopping at Small Businesses is a Way to Unite Communities

When you shop local, you can enjoy the feeling that you are truly helping a real person in your community. You’re supporting their livelihoods and families, and oftentimes you will get to enjoy one-on-one interaction with the shop owner him- or herself. It’s a very special experience, as their knowledge of their inventory and offerings is unrivaled.

3. Shopping Local Doesn’t Just Help Small Businesses – it Helps You, Too!

Apart from supporting local communities and enjoying a special connection to them, you’ll find some added perks when you stroll into a small business.

Local shops usually offer uncommon items – sometimes handmade or one-of-a-kind – that will knock the socks off the people you’re giving gifts to!
