After five years of experience leading a TPA call center in North Carolina, Andrew decided to move west to explore parts unknown and follow his passion of helping others. Walking through the doors of Ubiquity Retirement + Savings, formerly The Online 401(k) for the first time, he knew he’d found something special. Continuing to delight clients and partners alike and 10 years later, Andrew has been able to develop new teams, co-found a non-profit of strategic alliances, co-produce a hard-hitting documentary about the looming retirement crisis, and still had time to spread the savings gospel far and wide. Using social media and actual media alike (Wall Street Journal, Fox Business, PlanSponsor, and more), you’ll find no one who likes talking retirement more than this guy!

Every week, our office revolves around saving for retirement. However, we are extra psyched this week to celebrate National Save for Retirement Week–it’s going on right now until October 24! The week is organized by nonprofit ICMA-RC. It began when Senators Gordon Smith and Kent Conrad proposed a resolution to establish National Save for Retirement Week to increase public awareness about the importance of planning for retirement while educating folks on how to utilize employer-sponsored plans.

Don’t forget, retirement should be a 24/7 activity and can’t be limited to just a week.

With that in mind, we asked some of our awesome friends from FinCon 15 about saving for the long-term. Check out their responses below, and tweet us your retirement hashtag – ours is #YORO, you only retire once! – or your thoughts on the most important retirement savings tip. To follow the celebration on Twitter check out #NS4RW.

1. Whitney Hansen, Owner, Whitney Hansen Coaching @whitneyhansenco

What do you think is the most important retirement savings tip?

“The most important retirement savings tip is to make it automatic. Automating your retirement is the key to having a retirement. We are all busy; this is one way of making sure it gets done. Another important tip is to only put your money into investments you fully understand. If you don’t understand how an investment works, don’t put your money into it.”

What’s your retirement hashtag and why?

“My retirement hashtag is #SaversAreSexy. Because there’s nothing unsexy about preparing for retirement and managing your money.”

2. Kate Dore, Owner and Editor, Freelance Writer, CashvilleSkyline.com @katedore

What do you think is the most important retirement savings tip?

“Time and energy are your most valuable resources. That’s why it’s important to hustle and save intensely while you can. Continue finding motivation by imagining your future self.”

What’s your retirement hashtag and why?

“My retirement hashtag is #HustleAndSave because I believe in working hard while you’re young to create flexibility when you’re older.”

3. Scott Alan Turner, Personal Finance Blogger + Podcaster at scottalanturner.com @scottalanturner

What do you think is the most important retirement savings tip?

“Nobody cares as much about your money as you do. Become your own expert and learn as much as you can. You can retire one to two years earlier just by investing 30 minutes a month and discovering the best ways to invest and not blindly following the ‘experts’.”

What’s your retirement hashtag and why?

“My hashtag is #RockstarRetirement because we all have the opportunity to live like rock stars in retirement if we save early, and save often.”

4. Zina Kumok, Freelance Writer and Blogger at Debt Free After Three @zinakumok

What do you think is the most important retirement savings tip?

“Start where you are. It doesn’t matter if you can only contribute $25 a month, start there. Time is on your side, so starting early is key.”

What’s your retirement hashtag and why?

“I would say it’s #SavingForThatPenthouse because I really want a penthouse in London. It’s probably not likely, but it’s a nice visual to keep in mind. Plus, it’s specific. We all need to have a visual of what retirement means for us and not what it looks like for other people.”

5. DC-based investor (name withheld per request), Finance Blogger, Retire Before Dad @RetireBeforeDad

What do you think is the most important retirement savings tip?

“The key is to save aggressively into low-fee investments in tax-advantaged accounts throughout your working career. Additionally, I’m a firm believer in creating multiple streams of income so you aren’t solely reliant upon stock and bond investments. Real estate investing or an enjoyable side business are great options for diversifying retirement income.”

What’s your retirement hashtag and why?

“#RetireAndTravel, because that’s my ultimate plan. To retire in my 50s and travel two to four months out of each year.”
